Christmas is a time to GIVE

I just contacted Phoenix Rescue Mission this morning, and I hope to have an adoptive family by today so I can start shopping for them! I am so excited about doing this--We've always done Christmas Angels in the past, and I love it, but we've never had an entire family to help. I requested, because you can do so, a family with three children. I'm taking my three babies with me to go shopping, because I want each of them to feel a real connection to the child they are helping. That, and the selfish reason of wanting to develop a philanthropic attitude within them.

I recently saw a story the other day on CNN of a man that is begging for money on the streets. The tear-jerker here is that he has his two young sons with him. So as I was watching his kids hold up cardboard signs, I began to cry. Yunno, it's so easy to want things and think you need them, but then a story like this pops up on the news and you realize you already have everything you need. I mean, do I really need those leather boots I'm coveting at Urban? Well, okay I do, but that's really beside the point.

Seriously, though, I realized that I need to do more to help other people. My brother recently told me he's mentoring a high school kid. I thought that was so cool. I don't have the time to mentor someone right now with a baby attached to my back full-time, but whatever I can do, even if it's little, will hopefully make someone's day a little bit better.

*See the story of the man and his sons here.

Thanks for blogging about our Adopt a Family program and for signing up to sponsor a family. Your gifts will mean so much to the family you "adopt". Happy Holidays!

That story broke my heart! You are so right, all the things I think I need, that I think my children need, pale in comparison to some of the real suffering that is out there. Thanks for being a good example!

Hi - I did not take my children to the PRM. They had a minimun age req. of 10 so I left them with a sitter, thout my friend Sara did bring her 10 year old and I think it was a great way to show the little girl just how much she has and that there are MANY in need out there and it is GOOD to give... I would encourage you to take your older ones there...
