Ekers, Ethan Bnethan, ET

Yesterday, Ethan and I ran some errands after school and got caught in what felt like hurricane winds while walking into Costco. For an Arizonan, that's kind of a cool thing. Especially if you're 5. Or 29. We don't get that kind of weather here very often, so it's such a treat whenever it comes through. We totally laughed at ourselves as we tried walking with the force of the wind pushing against us at each step.

On the way home, he started getting all question-y and future-y.

"Will we still go on vacations together when I have my own family?"

"Yes, of course! I would love that....Sebbie and his family, You and your family, Moona and her family and me and Daddy! That would be so much fun!"

"Are we still family even when I get my own family?"

"Yes.....it's just a different 'part' of your family, that's all. You'll have your own wife and kids just like Daddy does. But I'll always be your mommy and you're gonna visit me every weekend when you're a grown-up! Okay?"

"Mmm-hmm."

Minute pause. And then, just because I love his responses, I had to ask,

"So, what do you think your wife is gonna look like?"

"Mmmm.......(smile comes to his face) she's gonna have yellow, no, black hair. Aaaaand........she's gonna have your color eyes.......and she'll have your skin, too........."

He just stopped right there and looked out the window. I knew why he said that, and I just wanted to eat him up right there. I grabbed my phone so I could remember how he looked that very moment in case my mind decided to stick it behind some other memory, and called his name. He looked over and this is what I got.

This is my 5-year-old boy. We are driving past some farmland and it is sprinkling outside and the wind is mighty. This is my baby boy who in about 7 days will turn another year older. This is my boy that every night after tuck-in time tells me,

"Goodnight, Pretty Mama. I love you to the moon and back a bazillion times and I love you forever I like you for always as long as I'm living my baby you'll be. I love you all the way to infinity hundred thousand million google, google, google. Goodnight!"

* May I never forget your voice and how you say that to me. Kisses, Mommy.
